- S: The story likely takes place largely in metaphor or in the main character's mind, but given that it is not obviously conveyed that way, some of the events near the end
are shocking to the complex reality the story takes place in. In particular, a triumvirate relationship, a murder, and a very short prison sentence all are a bit far-fetched. The outrageous, coincidental
nature of some parts of the story lend me to believe that a large part of the story is only taking place in Edward's mind.
- C: Some excellent shots and nearly no cinematographic mistakes. Only one out of place scene transition that is apparently slow. Costume and makeup are an obvious highlight.
- E: The first half and second half feel like two different stories that don't always flow together perfectly, but perhaps this is the point.
- N: The story is brilliant for may reasons. It's a modernized Beauty and the Beast, but it acknowledges its flaws while telling the story within a story. Very interesting and novel conceptually.
- T: The film received two bonus points: one for a face-ripping scene, and one for the complex self-aware narrative that communicates the main character's psychology through
Elephant Man meets (500) Days of Summer. One of my favorites of the year.
