- S: Painfully sensible. The film does an outrageously good job of justifying Lee's deep melancholy.
- C: All aspects of this film are beautiful. There are so many extremely excellent shots that elevate this film. The sets and costuming also build out the reality so well.
- E: Such an incredible watch. In being very nit-picky, the only issue is a slight lull in all the repetition with Patrick's efforts to sleep with his girlfriends. However, I think
it could be easily argued that this element brings a necessary comedy and light-heartedness to a film that is very dark, serious, and sad.
- N: The reason this film is such a home-run comes down to two things and the first of those is the story. It's a story full of life, death, love, loss, joy, and heart-ache
that is thorough in its character design and nuanced in its message.
- T: The film received all five possible bonus points: one for the heart-breaking contrast of the joyful times with Lee's friends and family with the
depression after the loss, one for the borderline perfect scene between Lee and Randi on the pier, one for the amazing lawyer-accident reveal sequence, one for the unforgettable
scene in the police station, and one for an unbelieveable, jaw-dropping, perfect performance from Casey Affleck that is the second critical element to this films success. This film deserves even more than five bonus points in my opinion,
with Michelle Williams proving again why she is one of the most talented actresses ever, Lucas Hedges delivering an incredible performance that guarantees him jobs in the business forever, Kyle Chandler
showing that it doesn't take very much screen-time to make an impact, music that fits just right,
and too many great shots to count.
I think this is one of the best films ever made. Shot choices, set design, lighting, acting, music, story; its got everything. I watch this film annually and get something new out of it every time.
