- Sensibility: The motorcyle sequences alone are so detached from the reality of the
film that it's actually laughable. Add on top of this a load of scientific nonsense and a resolution that doesn't even begin to solve the plot's problems and this film is hard to swallow.
- Cinematography: The film's framing and direction makes it play like a corny 80's action thriller, particularly due to painful over-use of quick zoom and slow-motion sequences. It gives the film a very
cheesy vibe, when it is already hard enough to take it seriously. Action choreography is well performed, but designed in a way that is absurd to the point its distracting. Production design and costuming are solid, but
not valuable enough to save this film.
- Energy: The film has moments, but the burden of the nonsense character behaviors and far-fetched action sequences weighs the film down massively.
- Narrative: This film is a sequel in title only. The personality of Ethan Hunt is so different from the previous film and even all the sequels.
The narrative is corny, full of pointless changes in locations, and over-dramatized action for its own sake. On top of this it is painfully predictable. The entire back half felt like a kid playing with GI Joe figures and Hot Wheels cars.
- T-Points: The film received one bonus point for the jousting motorcycle sequence that is so bad it's good.
This film is so off-base from the first one, I can't believe it didn't kill the franchise. It's not a sequel to the original in narrative or in spirit.
