- Sensibility: Some of the circular nature of the story is hard to contextualize, but otherwise this hilarious story is surprisingly sensible.
- Cinematography: Solid visual direction, great production design, and excellent costuming all combine to make a beautiful film. A couple of noticeable shot-to-shot inconsistencies and some odd focus choices in certain scenes take away from the immersion.
- Energy: Non-stop, messy relationship fun. Boosted tremendously by great chemistry between the four main characters and excellent music choices. Only let-down is a resolution that feels too obvious and labors getting to the end.
- Narrative: A very strong premise and thorough character development give the relationships a lot of life. The film that is largely overt in its intent is full of lots subtle gags to enjoy. However, the circular nature of the film cheapens the meaning of the narrative a bit.
- T-Points: The film received four bonus points: one for a great quip about expensive things getting more expensive, one for a brutal rejection "think about something else," one for a very subtle bit around hiding New Balance sneakers, and one for a scene with a giddy love-struck crosswalk guard.
Am I biased because Dakota Johnson is in this? Yeah probably. Am I going to try to adjust my ratings to correct for this bias? Nah. I think this film actually has a lot of good: some great sublte and pithy humor and great chemistry between the main cast. Sure, it's got issues, but
it stands out amongst the usual rom-com slop that gets pumped out every year.
