- Sensibility: A few strange relationships and dialogue make for some awkward scenes, but otherwise fairly sensible.
- Cinematography: Costuming, hair, and makeup are all very good and important to the narrative. Some odd transitions, sound design, and lighting choices take away from the film a bit. Doesn't have
a lot to offer visually, with most of the scenes taking place in two rather lackluster locations.
- Energy: Pacino and McConaughey deliver great performances that carry this film. However, some of the dialogue feels like Pacino is just ad-libbing and unfortunately it shows.
- Narrative: The story is very predictable and has an unexpected twist at the end that isn't as satisfying or rational as the film intended it to be. Many scenes have messy dialogue and a lot of
Pacino's character feels off the cuff.
- T-Points: The film received two bonus points: one for a quip "that's not where those thoughts enter" and one for a scene where Walter describes the best high with the dice dancing.
This film fits into a string of films where the film is essentially built around a cast, not a cast built around a story. Pacino feels like he's playing the same wise-guy character he's been playing for decades even by
the time this film came out. So many aspects of the film fall short of the mark.
